In other(s) words ...
Many a nervous bride has watched eagerly the Melbourne forecast as her wedding day draws closer, knowing full well with this city that a forecast on Monday predicting a beautiful sunny weekend, doesn't mean that's what will eventuate. By Friday night, the outlook can be completely different and have brides scrambling for designer umbrellas and raincoats, in a bid to at least get some quirky photo opportunities from the less than desirable conditions. For years Mike Larkan has been the man that brides and grooms have turned to for the forecast of sunshine or showers for their special day. Nowadays, brides and grooms also turn to him to deliver the wedding ceremony on their special day.
In his teens, TV Presenter and our favourite Weather Reporter Mike Larkan played guitar in a wedding band. In his 20's he was a wedding DJ, by his 30's he was the MC at weddings, and now, Mike continues the trend and clear enjoyment of weddings as a registered Civil Celebrant for many lucky couples around Melbourne.
Given that he's spent a bit of time on the wedding scene, Mike's advice to couples who are choosing the right Celebrant for their wedding is well-informed and honest. "Choose someone you are comfortable with, someone who can write a poignant and personalised service, someone who will complement you as a couple - not compete with you, and someone who has a great sound system!". Warm, friendly and humorous, Mike, a journalist writes his own scripts, personalising each service for his couples. He also prides himself on spending a lot of time getting to know the couples and consulting with them about the kind of service they would like to have. Finally, by also owning a state of the art cordless sound system, Mike ticks all of the boxes and expectations for a great Celebrant.
An avid Bombers supporter and Australia Day, Variety Club and Lost Dogs Home ambassador, Mike takes a second to think when asked about his most memorable wedding. "It was a surprise wedding that took place just last weekend where the guests had been invited to an 'engagement party' at the beautiful Billilla Gardens, only to find it was the actual wedding. It was raw emotion of the family and friends that really hit a chord with me..."
Whilst this charming Celebrant describes his dream wedding as taking place overseas, perhaps Italy, he lists the many other fabulous locations he is scheduled to deliver services around Melbourne. Melbourne Zoo, Melbourne Aquarium, Royal Botanic Gardens, Eureka Tower, Brighton Beach (bride arriving by Yacht), Windmill Gardens - and the list goes on.
Truly engaging and personable to chat with, it's easy to see why Mike is great at being a Civil Celebrant, and why he's so busy on the wedding circuit these days. The weather forecast might be at the mercy of Mother Nature, but you can place a firm bet on a beautifully coordinated ceremony with the experience of Mike. Even his business card reads; Mike Larkan, wedding celebrant - forecasting a beautiful life together.
